Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix 2012 - Qualifying Races

It was warm and muggy, but thanks to the cloud cover, it wasn’t as hot as last year.  We got to Schenley Park early and staked out a spot near Phipps Botanical Garden to watch the first heats.  These may be old cars, but they really race.  Some of my shots even captured wheels coming off the ground!

After taking photos for a couple of heats, we made our way to the golf course.  Cars were still pulling in for the show, and the overcast didn’t make for overly exciting pictures, so we wandered back over to the course.  As we walked the length of the course, we stopped at good vantage points to take photos.  The racing was fun, the cars were cool, and we were having a good time.

When we got all the way around the course - at the backside of Phipps - we had a decision to make.  We could either walk all the way back around, or try to find another way to get around Phipps (the roads there were blocked off because of the race).  Since Barry had done some running on the trails in the park, we decided to take a walk and see if we could find a short-cut.  I really wish I had a pedometer on, because that short-cut felt like about 10 miles!  We would come to the end of a train only to find that we were on the wrong side of the course and couldn’t cross over!  Every trail we went up was the same way.  And the trails kept getting narrower as we went.  At one point, I had to come down a slope on my butt so I wouldn’t fall in the mud and break any camera gear.  We finally got to the railroad tracks and followed them back to Pitt, where we walked back to the course.  Fortunately, there was a Quizno’s on the way, because I was starving by then!  It was tiring, but I have to say it was an adventure, a good workout, and kinda fun.

Back at the races, we were too tired to do much looking or photo taking at the show.  Cars were already starting to leave anyway (yes, we wasted that much time!).  It was a good day, but next time, we’ll stay off the trails!
